Recent friction involving a provocative round of missile tests by North Korea and subsequent ongoing diplomatic efforts to denuclearise the Korean Peninsula and avoid a devastating nuclear conflict has prompted louder calls by many nations for the prohibition and elimination of all nuclear weapons. Which nations currently possess these weapons of mass destruction; and what countermeasures are being taken by the international community, such as the implementation of treaties, negotiations, sanctions and inspections?
