Ludwig Leichardt (1813-1848) was a Prussian naturalist and explorer who is famous for his exploration of Northern and Central Australia. He disappeared on his second expedition to reach the Swan River in Western Australia from the Condamine on the Darling Downs and was presumed killed by aborigines. The circumstances of his demise have been a mystery for many years. The Leichhardt River in Queensland was named after him, the suburbs of Leichhardt in Ipswich and Sydney and Leichhardt's Grasshopper.
