Zelia is the daughter of Beniamino (Bert) and Maria Togno. Bert Togno first came to Western Australia in 1911 when he was 15. He returned to North Italy a few years later, where he met and married Zelia's mother, Maria Poletti. In 1929 Bert Togno came back to Australia and prepared the way for Maria and daughter Erica, who joined him in 1931, to settle in Wanneroo. Zelia was born a year later.
